Water color comes from the finish
Pool water is nearly colorless: what you see is the finish, filtered through metres of water. White interiors give bright turquoise; sand tones give warm lagoon green; grey cools the water toward steel blue; deep anthracite and black read as a mirror. In the designer you can flip through finishes and custom colors on your exact pool — under day and night light — before committing.
Porcelain tile: the durable premium
Fully vitrified porcelain is the most durable pool interior there is: frost-proof, colorfast, chemically inert, and cleanable forever. It costs the most upfront and demands a skilled tiler, but it's the finish that still looks new after 20 winters. Formats from 2.5 cm mosaic to large-format sheets change the character completely — mosaic wraps curves, large formats read calm and architectural.
Plaster and paint: budget with a rhythm
Plaster (marcite, quartz or polished aggregate) is the affordable classic: seamless, smooth, renewable. It ages faster than tile — expect re-polishing or re-plastering on a 10–15 year rhythm — and it's more sensitive to water chemistry. Paint is cheaper still, and on a 3–5 year repaint cycle; best for renovations and strict budgets.
Mixing finishes
A common premium move: tile the waterline band and steps (where wear and scale concentrate), plaster the rest. You get tile where fingers touch and eyes look, at a fraction of the full-tile price.
Frequently asked questions
- What finish makes water look 'Maldives turquoise'?
- White or very light cream interiors under sun. Add a sand-colored deck and shallow zones — depth darkens any color.
- How long does each finish last?
- Porcelain tile: decades. Quality plaster: 10–15 years to renewal. Paint: 3–5 years per cycle.
- Are dark pools warmer?
- Slightly — a dark bottom absorbs more sun, typically worth 1–2 °C. The bigger effects are covers and wind protection.
