How deep should a pool be?
Depth decides who can use the pool, what it costs and whether anyone may ever dive. Most pools need less of it than people think.

The standard: 1.2 m shallow, 1.8 m deep
The classic family pairing is a 1.2 m shallow end sloping to a 1.8 m deep end. At 1.2 m, children stand and adults wade comfortably; at 1.8 m, adults swim without touching and can tread water properly. The slope between them should be gradual — in our designer it runs smoothly through the middle of the pool, like real builds do.
Uniform depth is underrated
Lap pools and plunge pools increasingly use one depth everywhere — typically 1.35 m. It's enough to swim, shallow enough to stand, and it simplifies the structure: one floor level, simpler excavation, less water to heat. If nobody in the family wants a deep end, a uniform 1.35–1.4 m pool is cheaper to build and run and safer for kids.
Diving changes everything
Head-first diving from the edge needs at least 2.4 m of water depth over a large area — more under any board. That extra metre of depth adds excavation, concrete, water volume and heating cost for a feature used a handful of times each summer. Most private pools are better designed as no-diving pools, communicated clearly, with a 1.8–2.0 m deep end.
Depth drives volume more than area does
Adding 20 cm of depth to an 8 × 4 m pool adds over 6 m³ of water — as much as adding half a metre of length. When you tune depths in the designer, watch the computed volume: it's the number your heating and chemical bills follow.

- What depth is safe for children?
- Children need water they can stand in: 0.9–1.2 m. A tanning ledge (10–40 cm of water) gives toddlers a genuinely safe splash zone within the main pool.
- Can I dive in a 1.8 m pool?
- No — head-first diving needs 2.4 m or more. 1.8 m is for swimming and jumping feet-first.
- What depth for a swim-only lap pool?
- A uniform 1.35–1.4 m. Deep water adds nothing to lap swimming; constant depth makes turns predictable and cuts volume.
